Here’s an excerpt:

The Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 83,000 times in 2011. If it were an exhibit at the Louvre Museum, it would take about 4 days for that many people to see it.

The Coasters are one of the big rock and roll groups from the late 1950s.  Their double-sided smash hit…SEARCHIN’-#3 Top 100 and #1 for 12 weeks on the R&B chart, with the flip-side…YOUNG BLOOD-#8 Top 100 and #1 R&B was one of the biggest hits of 1957.

In June of 1958 they charted a record that would become their biggest Billboard Top 100 and Hot 100 hit…YAKETY YAK  on Atco Records (6116).  The single became The Coasters only #1 hit on the pop chart and remained on the Top 100 for 16 weeks.  The Coasters crossed over to the Billboard R&B chart and charted their third #1 hit single.  YAKETY YAK  was awarded a Grammy: Hall of Fame Award and the song was selected by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the songs that shaped rock and roll.

The flip-side of the single is one of The Coasters best…ZING! WENT THE STRINGS OF MY HEART  a wonderful doo-wop song that proves just how really good The Coasters were.  Their vocalizing is superb and the up-tempo beat moves you through one of their best recordings ever.  The single did not chart, but did receive some air-play.  It should have been a Top 10 hit.

The Coasters would chart 19 Billboard Top 100 and Hot 100 hits between 1956 and 1971.  The original group included members:  Carl Gardner-lead, Billy Guy-baritone lead, Leon Hughes-tenor, Bobby Nunn-bass and Adolph Jacobs-guitar.  Cornelius Gunter joined the group in 1957 and left in 1961.  The Coasters were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Norman Fox & The Rob Roys never charted a national hit record, but their 1957 recording of  TELL ME WHY  on Back Beat Records is considered a classic by doo-wop music fans of the era.  The Rob Roys single on Back Beat Records (501) was a hit on the East coast, especially, New York and Philadelphia.  The group was originally called The Velvetones.  Back Beat records was a Gospel Music label and not equiped for the rock and roll market.  This in itself led to poor promotion of Norman Fox & The Rob Roys recordings…in a market that was flooded with new material.

The group would record other great material on Back Beat…DANCE, GIRL, DANCE,  LOVER DOLL and  DREAM GIRL / PIZZA PIE  in 1958 on Capitol Records.  The group that formed in the Bronx, New York in 1956 was one of the few interracial groups recording at this time.  The group took their name from the “Rob Roy” cocktail.  Members included: Norman Fox-lead, Bob Trotman, Andre Lilly, Robert Thierer and Marshall “Buzzy” Helfand.  Back Beat Records was a subsidiary of the Duke/Peacock Records in 1957.  The group without a national hit split in 1963.  They reunited briefly in 1971 and 1986.

The Belmonts, without Dion, recorded their version of  TELL ME WHY  in 1961.  The single on Sabrina Records became a hit for them when it made its Billboard Hot 100 debut on May 22, 1961.  TELL MY WHY  climbed the Hot 100 to #18, becomming The Belmonts first Hot 100 hit, after their split with Dion.

The “GOLDEN ERA OF ROCK AND ROLL” BRINGS THE ORIGINAL HIT BY…NORMAN FOX & THE ROB ROYS…AND…THE BELMONTS…1961 HIT. Great music, from the earl days of rock and roll.

The Four Ekkos had a local hit with this record in 1959 on Label Records (2022). The single featured…HAND IN HAND  backed by  THINK TWICE.  The song was popular in the Buffalo and Rochester, New York area and received much air-play.  The Four Ekkos also backed up Jerry Engler on his hit…SPUTNIK in 1957.

When you listen to this record you get a feel for the music of the late 50s, simple and pure…weather a rock song or a ballad…just good old rock and roll.  We hope you enjoy hearing this piece of Lost Gold…a love song from the “GOLDEN ERA OF ROCK AND ROLL”.   THE FOUR EKKOS….”HAND IN HAND”.

The Surfaris were a teen rock and roll/surf band from Glendora, California. Members included, Ron Wilson, Jim Fuller, Bob Berryhill, Pat Connolly and Jim Pash. In 1963 they recorded a song that became a rock and roll legend, the instrumental classic…WIPE OUT on Dot Records (16479).

The single made its debut on the Billboard Hot 100 on June 22, 1963 and became one of the biggest hits of the year…charting at #2 on the Hot 100 and staying on the chart for 16 weeks. The flip-side of the single…SURFER JOE was a combination vocal and instrumental, it did not chart.

In August of 1963, DJ’s began playing the flip-side and on August 22, 1963…SURFER JOE charted. The single became a #62 hit and charted for 6 weeks.

WIPE OUT would chart again in 1966 when Dot/Paramount (144) reissued the original single and flip-side. WIPE OUT charted at #16 and was on the Hot 100 for 14 weeks.  SURFER JOE did not chart. In 1970 the same Dot/Paramount single was reissued…this time it charted at #110 on the Billboard Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart.

WIPE OUT is a radio classic and continues to be a summer favorite. It is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This million-seller from 1963 is one of the most famous surf and instrumental classics of the “GOLDEN ERA OF ROCK AND ROLL”.
