Hello, Johnny Nash was born in Houston, Texas on August 19, 1940. He is a singer/actor who began his career on local TV at the age of 13. He was on Arthur Godfrey’s TV and radio shows from 1956 through 1963. Johnny appeared in the movie “Take A Giant Step” in 1959.
He has record various genres of music, from pop to reggae. His first big hit record made its Billboard Top 100 debut on December 30, 1957. His beautiful ballad A VERY SPECIAL LOVE on ABC-Paramount Records became a #23 hit on the Top 100 and remained on the chart for 10 weeks. A classic ballad this song has been a collector’s item for a number of years. His next big hit was a narrative that featured, Paul Anka, George Hamilton IV and Johnny Nash, the record THE TEEN COMMANDMENTS was a song about the things that a 1950’s teenager should not do. A be a good kid song. The song worked, charting at #29 on the Billboard Hot 100. A few months later in March of 1959 Johnny would chart his version of the classic AS TIME GOES BY. The single record climbed the Hot 100 to #43.
Johnny would continue to record between 1959 and 1966 and have a couple of minor hits. In 1965 Johnny and Danny Sims formed the JAD Records label in New York. His first big hit for his new label came in September of 1968 with his Top 10 smash, HOLD ME TIGHT. The single charted at #5 on the Hot 100 and became a huge hit in the UK, charting at #5 on the UK Singles Chart. His next was YOU GOT SOUL charting in December of 1968. The single only reached #58 in the US but became a #6 hit on the UK Singles Chart in 1969. In November of 1969 a re-make of the Sam Cooke classic CUPID became his next hit climbing the Hot 100 to #39. Johnny’s version had all the flavor of Reggae in it as the tune just made your feet start to move. The song became another huge hit on the UK Singles Chart at #6.
His next big hit was his career record…I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW on Epic Records made its Billboard Hot 100 debut on September 9, 1972 and wasted very little time reaching #1 in the US, a spot it held for 4 weeks. The single remained on the Hot 100 for 20 weeks, making it one of the biggest hits of 1972. I CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW charted at #5 on the UK Singles Chart. Huge world-wide sales of the single record topped 1 million, earning Johnny a “Gold Record”. His follow-up hit was STIR IT UP also on Epic Records. The single was a big hit in both the US and the UK, charting at #12 in the US and #13 in the UK.
Johnny would chart a few more hits through 1976 in the US but none would be Top 40 records. He did well in the UK charting, THERE ARE MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS in 1972 at #9, TEARS ON MY PILLOW would become a #1 hit in the UK in 1975 and (What A) WONDERFUL WORLD would be his last Top 40 hit in the UK, charting at #25 in 1976.
