Hello, One of my favorite oldies was recorded by Rosie Hamlin, lead singer of Rosie And The Originals. She was born on July 21, 1945 in Klamath Falls, Oregon. She was raised in Anchorage, Alaska. When she was only 14 years old she wrote the lyrics for her classic million-seller, ANGEL BABY as a poem. Members of The Originals included, David Ponci, Noah Tafolla, Tony Gomez and Carl Von Goodat.
When she was just 15 years old Rosie recorded ANGEL BABY. It had a very simple with lyrics that teenagers could relate to and a very simplistic sound which I believe led to its beauty and its staying power after all these years. On December 12, 1960, ANGEL BABY on Highland Records made its Billboard Hot 100 debut. The single became a huge hit on the Hot 100 charting at #5 and remaining on the top singles list for 13 weeks. On January 16, 1961 ANGEL BABY charted on the Billboard R&B chart and climbed up the chart into the Top 10, at #5.
The follow-up to ANGEL BABY was LONELY BLUE NIGHTS on Brunswick Records. The title on the record was ROSIE formerly with The Originals. The single charted on March 13, 1961 and climbed to #66. A different version was released later on Highland Records as by Rosie And The Originals, but did not chart.
Rosie is still performing today. John Lennon frequently said that ANGEL BABY was one of his all-time favorite records. Her classic recording of is a staple of oldies radio and is a “true classic”. Since it became a hit in 1960 the record has been played somewhere in this country, each and every day…that is a “true classic”. A song that speaks volumes of the great music that is a part of the “Golden Era Of Rock And Roll”.
Till the next time—Joe
