Hello,  The Shells are a R&B group from Brooklyn, New York.  Members included Nathaniel “Little Nate” Bouknight-lead, Gus Geter, Bobby Nurse, Shade Alston and Danny Small.  The group released their one national hit  BABY OH BABY  on Johnson Records in 1957 with  ANGEL EYES as the flip side.  The single had some success in 1957 but other single record releases failed to have any chart success…some of those singles were:  SIPPIN’ SODA  in 1958,  BE SURE MY LOVE  1960 and  SO FINE  in 1960 to name a few.

The producers of  BABY OH BABY,  Don Fileti and Wayne Stierle re-issued the single in late 1960.  On December 19, 1960  BABY OH BABY  made its Billboard Hot 100 debut.  The single climbed up the chart to #21 and remained on the Hot 100 for 8 weeks.  The flip side of the re-issued single was changed to  WHAT’S IN AN ANGEL’S EYES,  it failed to chart.

The Shells failed to chart any other single records, but their one chart hit  BABY OH BABY,  is very popular with doo-wop fans and has been selected as one of the Top 1000 Doo-Wop songs of all-time, along with  WHAT’S IN AN ANGEL’S EYES  and SIPPIN’ SODA  by Gribin/Schiff in their book, “The Complete Book of Doo-Wop”.
