LOST GOLD / LOST GOLD JUKEBOX–RICK NELSON–“DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN”

Hi,  Rick Nelson is one of the biggest hit makers of the rock era…his hits can fill a book…he is a talented actor…song writer…in other words he could do it all.  He put 63 records on the Billboard Pop chart between 1957 and 1973.  In the late 1950’s when there was a Billboard chart for Extended Play records, which were usually taken from 45s or album cuts…Ricky as he was then called, charted 5 EP’s.  Four of them were #1s and one was #3.

Rick recorded an album of newly recorded versions of his early hits.  The album was issued on Silver Eagle Records and sold exclusively on TV…the album was a big success.  MCA Records, the owner of Rick’s old Decca recordings decided to release the album at retail.  To promote the album Rick went back into the studio and re-cut a new version of the only new song from the album…DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN.  The album and the single were released in February of 1986, two months after his death.  The single was as great a recording as Rick had ever put on the market.  He energy and vocals were amazing.  The band was outstanding and then their was The Jordaniares, always super backing.  Rick was back.

The single received some air-play but there was not the push behind it…perhaps because of the plane crash that took his life on New Years Eve, 1985 at the age of 45.  DO YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN  is Rick Nelson at his rockabilly best…this recording is “Pure Gold”.  Who knows what new music would have come from this talented man…one can only imagine.
