The Flamingos charted 11 hit singles on the Billboard pop charts between 1959 and 1970. One of the finest R&B vocal groups of their era, The Flamingos hailed from Chicago, Illinois. Members included cousins Zeke and Jake Carey, Tommy Hunt, Nate Nelson, Johnny Carter and Paul Wilson. Carter would replace Johnny Funches in The Dells vocal group in 1960. Tommy Hunt went on to a solo career in 1961 and Nelson joined The Platters in 1966.
January 19, 1959 marked the debut of The Flamingos first Billboard Hot 100 single record, the classic…LOVERS NEVER SAY GOODBYE on End Records. The single charted at #52 and became a standard in their catalog of tunes. The single remained on the chart for 10 weeks. The master recording was originally entitled PLEASE WAIT FOR ME. The flip-side of the single THAT LOVE IS YOU, did not chart.
Later in 1959 The Flamingos would become household names when their classic…I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU became a #11 Hot 100 hit record. The group continued to sing LOVERS NEVER SAY GOODBYE in their concerts through the years and the song has become an R&B, Doo-Wop and Pop favorite. In 1961 End Records re-issued the single…it charted at #117 on Billboards Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart.
Nate Nelson died in May of 1988 at the age of 53, Jake Carey died in December of 1997 at the age of 74 and Zeke Carey died in December of 1999 at the age of 66. The Flamingos were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. Their sound is unmistakable…one of the best from the “GOLDEN ERA OF ROCK AND ROLL”.
