ROY ORBISON–“RUNNING SCARED”

Roy Orbison had charted 5 Billboard Hot 100 hits by the time his sixth Hot 100 hit reached the charts.  On April 10, 1961 the operatic rock and roll singer/songwriter charted a record that would become his first #1 hit.  That song is his classic…RUNNING SCARED…on Monument Records.  The single held the #1 spot for 1 week and remained on the Hot 100 for 17 weeks.  It became his third Top 10 single, the other two were,  ONLY THE LONELY (Know The Way I Feel)-#2 in 1960 and  BLUE ANGEL-#9 in 1960.

The flip-side of  RUNNING SCARED  is the beautiful haunting ballad  LOVE HURTS, it did not chart.  The Everly Brothers recorded the song for their “A Date With The Everly Brothers” album on Warner Records.  The hard rock band Nazareth released the song in 1975 and charted it at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over a million copies on A&M Records.

Roy Orbison charted 31 Billboard Hot 100 hits in his recording career, with the last coming in 1989 with his #9 hit…YOU GOT IT.  The single reached the Hot 100 on January 21, 1989.  Roy Orbison died on December 6, 1988 at the age of 52.  He is one of the classic recording artists of all-time and his musical legacy lives in the “GOLDEN ERA OF ROCK AND ROLL”
