This classic doo-wop recording was first a hit in 1954. The duo of Marvin & Johnny recorded…CHERRY PIE and it became a hit on Modern Records. Marvin & Johnny included, Marvin Phillips and Emory “Johnny” Perry. Marvin would record over the years with many other artists including Jesse Belvin. They would have a hit in 1953 as Jesse & Marvin with their recording of DREAM GIRL. Marvin & Johnny’s version of CHERRY PIE is considered by many as the ultimate version, but the duo of, Skip & Flip recorded their version in 1960. Their single on Brent Records became a #11 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
Skip & Flip included, Gary “Flip” Paxton and Clyde “Skip” Battin. Paxton formed the Hollywood Argyles and later started his own record label, Garpax Records. They also charted another hit single, in 1959 IT WAS I became a #11 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
