The Five Keys are an R&B vocal group from Newport News, Virginia.  Their first hit record was recorded in 1951…THE GLORY OF LOVE  on Aladdin Records (45-3099) became the groups biggest hit, charting at #1 on the Billboard R&B chart.  Their next hit charted in January of 1955 on  the Billboard R&B chart and in December of 1954 on the Billboard Top 100 (Pop chart).  That record was…LING, TING, TONG  a #5 R&B hit and a #28 Pop hit (their first pop hit).  The group was now recording for Capitol Records and the single was issued as Capitol 2945.

They would follow-up in March of 1955 with their classic recording of…CLOSE YOUR EYES  (Capitol 3032).  The single was a huge success on the R&B chart, reaching #5 and remaining on the chart for 16 weeks.  The single did not chart on the Billboard Top 100.  It was hard in the days before Elvis, for R&B records to get their reward on AM pop radio.  This classic record should have been a huge pop hit..

The Five Keys members included:  Brothers, Rudy West and Bernie West, Ripley Ingram, Maryland Pierce and James “Dickie” Smith.  Ramon Loper replaced Smith in 1953.  The group was one of the finest vocal groups of their day.  Some of their songs are listed in the top Doo-Wop songs of all time…Wonderful vocals…great songs…The Five Keys are one of the best from the early days of Rock and Roll.
