Elvis Presley could not just sing rock and roll…he could sing “anything” and make it sound like his own. So, it is no surprise that when Elvis recorded his first Christmas album…”ELVIS’ CHRISTMAS ALBUM” (RCA LOC-1035) in 1957, the album became another smash hit…#1 for four weeks and on the LP chart for a total of seven weeks.
The album achieved sales of over $1 million dollars and was awarded a “Gold Record” on August 13, 1963. The album was certified “Gold” by the RIAA.
One of the classic cuts from Elvis’ Christmas Album is…”BLUE CHRISTMAS”. The song was played in hot radio rotation during that 1957 Christmas season and has remained a constant Christmas classic ever since. The song was written by Billy Hayes and Jay Johnson. Russ Morgan and Hugo Winterhalter had pop hits in 1949 with the song and Ernest Tubb had a #2 country hit, also in 1949. Elvis recorded “BLUE CHRISTMAS” on September 5, 1957. The record was not released as a single until 1964…the single included…”BLUE CHRISTMAS” and “WOODEN HEART” (RCA 447-0720). It was also released in 1965 with…”SANTA CLAUS IS BACK IN TOWN” as the flip-side on (RCA 447-0647). Neither single charted on the Billboard Hot 100.
We are happy to present the “King of Rock and Roll”…ELVIS PRESLEY…singing some of his classic “CHRISTMAS FAVORITES”.
Till the next time—Joe
