SINGER FONTELLA BASS PASSED AWAY ON DECEMBER 26, 2012 AT THE AGE OF 72…WE PASS OUR GRATITUDE TO HER FAMILY….FOR HER WONDERFUL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE WORLD OF MUSIC…THROUGH HER MUSIC SHE WILL NEVER LEAVE US…OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO HER FAMILY….

BORN ON JULY 3, 1940 IN ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI. FONTELLA WAS AN R&B SINGER, PIANIST AND ORGANIST. HER MOTHER WAS A MEMBER OF THE CLARA WARD GOSPEL TROUPE. SHE WAS IN LITTLE MILTON’S BLUES SHOW UNTIL 1964.

IN 1965 SHE CHARTED HER FIRST TOP TEN HIT ON THE BILLBOARD R&B CHART…”DON’T MESS UP A GOOD THING”…ON THE CHECKER RECORDS LABEL. THE SINGLE CHARTED AT #5 AND CROSSED OVER TO THE BILLBOARD HOT 100, CHARTING AT #33.
ON SEPTEMBER 25, 1965 HER BIGGEST HIT MADE ITS R&B DEBUT….”RESCUE ME” ON CHECKER RECORDS (1120) MADE ITS WAY UP THE CHART, GOING ALL THE WAY TO #1 AND REMAINING ON THE BILLBOARD R&B CHART FOR 19 WEEKS, 4 OF THOSE WEEKS AT #1. ON OCTOBER 2, 1965 “RESCUE ME” MADE ITS BILLBOARD HOT 100 DEBUT…THE SINGLE WENT ALL THE WAY TO #4 AND STAYED ON THE HOT 100 FOR 13 WEEKS. THE FLIP-SIDE OF THE SINGLE RECORD…”SOUL OF THE MAN” DID NOT CHART ON EITHER BILLBOARD CHART.

WHILE HER HIT WAS A MILLION SELLER IN THE USA, SHE WAS EVEN A BIGGER HIT IN EUROPE. “RESCUE ME” BECAME A #1 HIT IN THE UK. HER LONG TIME FRIEND DWIGHT BOSMAN OF THE BOSMAN TWINS SAID…”SHE WAS WELL-LOVED ALL OVER THE WORLD, IN GERMANY, SWITZERLAND, ITALY AND FRANCE, THEY WOULD CHANT FONTELLA-FONTELLA AT THE FESTIVELS SHE WOULD PERFORM AT.”
FONTELLA BASS PASSED AWAY ON DECEMBER 26, 2012 AT THE AGE OF 72. A FAMILY WOMAN, SHE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED FOR THE BODY OF MUSIC SHE HAS LEFT…7 HIT RECORDS ON THE BILLBOARD R&B CHART AND 6 ON THE BILLBOARD POP CHARTS.

THE SINGLE CHARTED TWICE FOR THE GROUP…ON APRIL 6, 1959 ON THE KING RECORDS LABEL (5171), PEAKING AT # 16 ON THE BILLBOARD R&B CHART AS THE “B” SIDE OF THEIR #4 R&B HIT “TEARDROPS ON YOUR LETTER”. THE SECOND TIME “THE TWIST” CHARTED WAS ON JULY 25, 1960, THE SAME RECORD NUMBER WITH “TEARDROPS ON YOUR LETTER” THIS TIME, AS THE “B” SIDE. “THE TWIST” CHARTED AT #6 ON THE R&B CHART AND #28 ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100, POP CHART.

CHUBBY CHECKER RECORDED A COVER VERSION OF HANK BALLARD’S TUNE AND CHARTED IT TWICE. THE FIRST TIME WAS ON AUGUST 8, 1960 ON THE BILLBOARD R&B CHART. THE SINGLE RECORD ON PARKWAY RECORDS (811) BECAME A #2 R&B HIT. THE “B” SIDE “TOOT” DID NOT CHART. “THE TWIST” CHARTED ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100 POP CHART ON AUGUST 1, 1960 AND BECAME A #1 HIT RECORD, CREATING A WORLDWIDE DANCE CRAZE ALONG THE WAY. PARKWAY RE-RELEASED THE SINGLE AGAIN IN 1961. IT CHARTED ON THE BILLBOARD R&B CHART ON DECEMBER 11, 1961 AND CLIMBED TO #4. “THE TWIST” RE-ENTERED THE HOT 100 ON NOVEMBER 13, 1961 AND BECAME THE ONLY POP RECORD TO RE-ENTER THE CHARTS AND RETURN TO #1.
